Under the Green Communities Act, all of Massachusetts' investor-owned utilities are required to enter into long-term contracts to purchase at least three percent of their electricity supply from renewable generators. NRG Energy, Inc. has signed a binding letter of intent to purchase the South Trent wind farm near Sweetwater, Texas. Upon successful conclusion of the acquisition, South Trent will become the fourth plant in NRG’s onshore wind portfolio. The 150-megawatt Spring Valley Wind Project will be Nevada’s first major wind project and is expected to be generating electricity by late 2011.
