In the wake of Fukushima disaster, energy experts now agree that securing Europe’s future electricity supply will require an increasing convergence between existing fossil fuel sources and the fast-growing renewable generation sector. Nowhere is this fusing of interests required more than in Germany, in the light of the government’s decision to phase out all nuclear power by 2022. The case for integration is now compelling and is something that an increasing number of countries are going to have... [more]
Thanks to strong winds coming off the Baltic Sea, Estonia enjoys significant potential for wind power development, and the Estonian Wind Power Association (EWPA) has identified wind as the country’s leading resource for renewable energy. At the end of 2010, Estonia had 149 megawatts of installed wind capacity, with about 570 megawatts of new wind projects currently in development.
GE's wind turbine technology is making its debut in Estonia by supplying 18 wind turbines for the Paldiski Wind F... [more]
In August of 2010, Inox placed an initial order for 17 of American Superconductor Corporation (AMSC)’s wind turbine electrical control systems, which, as the “brains” of the wind turbine, monitor and control its operation and the flow of zero-emission electricity to the power grid. The systems are being utilized in 2 megawatt (MW) doubly-fed induction wind turbines that Inox is manufacturing under a global AMSC Windtec™ license.
AMSC has now received a $9 million follow-on order for the suppl... [more]
Three GE 1.5-megawatt (MW) wind turbines were installed in 2009 by the Kodiak Electric Association (KEA), Kodiak Island’s electric utility, as a part of the Pillar Mountain Wind Project.
These wind turbines supplied by GE are helping the city of Kodiak, on Kodiak Island off the southern coast of Alaska, reduce its use of diesel fuel and lower its energy costs while supporting the local utility’s vision to generate most of its power from renewable sources.
After a year of successful operat... [more]
According to an annual report published by Bloomberg New Energy Finance, the valuations placed on wind energy assets slipped in 2009. The report, Portfolio Hunters III: focus on the acquisition and valuation of wind power assets, shows that asset divestment programs by some developers and a risk-averse attitude by potential buyers led to a modest fall in the valuations placed on commissioned wind farms, and a bigger fall in the value of assets under development.
Bloomberg New Energy Finance’s... [more]
American Superconductor Corporation (AMSC) has received another follow-on order for 30 sets of wind turbine power electronic components from Hyundai Heavy Industries Co., Ltd (HHI). HHI will use the components in the 1.65 megawatt (MW) wind turbines designed by AMSC’s wholly owned AMSC Windtec™ subsidiary. AMSC expects to complete shipments under this new order by June 30, 2010.
“HHI’s vision is to be the global leader in heavy industries, providing products and services that are unrivalled i... [more]
