Carbon capture for coal power is a key element of a clean energy policy(22/03/2010)
Responding to the Government’s announcement on carbon capture and storage (CCS), Lord Chris Smith, Chairman of the Environment Agency, said: “The Environment Agency believes that carbon capture for coal power is a key element of a clean energy policy – which includes improved energy efficiency, safe nuclear power and a big increase in renewable energy generation. “Thiss announcement is a further step along the road to implementing carbon capture and storage in the UK. We believe that the cr... [more]
European Commission funds 15 offshore wind and carbon capture and storage projects(10/12/2009)
The European Commission has announced more than Euro1.5 billion/ £1.3 billion of money to support 15 offshore wind and carbon capture & storage (CCS) projects across Europe. United Kingdom partners are to receive around £262 million for three projects: £66m for HVDC hub in Scotland; £36m for an off-shore wind farm near Aberdeen, and £160m for a CCS project in Hatfield in Yorkshire. CCS projects in Kingsnorth in Kent and Longannet in Fife were put on a reserve list. Energy Commission Andris Pi... [more]
Carbon Sequestration Leadership Forum explores ways to accelerate the commercialisation of carbon capture and storage(27/10/2009)
Carbon capture and storage is a technology that allows reduction of fossil fuel emissions by capturing CO2 from large emitters (such as coal or gas power plants and the steel industry) and store it underground. The European Commission, along with leaders from 22 world countries, recently met in London to explore best ways to accelerate the commercialisation of carbon capture and storage (CCS). This 3rd Ministerial Meeting of the Carbon Sequestration Leadership Forum (CSLF) adopted a minister... [more]
Carbon capture and storage could help radically reduce emissions of the greenhouse gas(31/03/2009)
Technology which could drastically reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions across the globe will come under the spotlight at a lecture in Aberdeen this week, on Thursday 2 April. David S Hughes, Carbon Storage Specialist at Senergy Alternative Energy, in Aberdeen, will give an overview of how carbon capture and storage (CCS) could help radically reduce emissions of the greenhouse gas which is cited as a cause of global warming. Mr Hughes will explain the capture technologies currently availa... [more]
Alstom to design and construct a pilot carbon capture plant at Belchatow power plant(03/01/2009)
Alstom and PGE Elektrownia Belchatow S.A. have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for the development and implementation of carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology at the Belchatow power plant in Poland. In a first phase, Alstom will design and construct a pilot carbon capture plant at the existing unit 12 of the Belchatow power plant, which would capture approximately 100,000 tonnes per year of CO2 using Alstom’s advanced amines technology. The pilot will be jointly operated by A... [more]
Environment Agency calls for faster progress on carbon capture and storage technology(19/12/2008)
The Environment Agency recently recommended that no new coal-fired power stations should be built unless they can capture and store carbon emissions. In its response to the Government's consultation on carbon capture and storage, the Environment Agency called for faster progress on providing carbon capture and storage technology on a commercial scale. Lord Chris Smith, Chairman of the Environment Agency, said: “Building a new generation of coal fired power stations without capturing the carbo... [more]
British Prime Minister announces expansion of energy from renewable sources(20/11/2007)
A major expansion of energy from renewable sources and the launch of the competition to build one of the world's first carbon capture and storage (CCS) plants were among the measures set out in a major speech on climate change by the Prime Minister. The speech comes at a time when the Commission on Environmental Markets and Economic Performance (CEMEP) publishes its Government-commissioned report setting out the steps needed to unlock the business opportunities that exist in tackling climate ...
