Reliant Energy provides RECs equal to the estimated electricity use in Reliant Stadium for basketball tournament
Renewable energy credits (RECs) are created when electricity is produced using renewable resources such as wind, solar, biomass or hydro power. Reliant Energy has provided Texas RECs equal to the estimated electricity use in Reliant Stadium for the men’s college basketball tournament on April 2 and 4.
By purchasing credits, Reliant ensures that an amount equal to the electricity consumed at Reliant Stadium during the tournament games is generated from renewable sources in Texas.
“We are supporting renewable energy and helping reduce the environmental impact of every player, fan and employee who steps into the stadium during the tournament,” said Jason Few, Reliant Energy President. “Reliant Energy buys more RECs than any other electricity provider in Texas. Helping our customers support the environment with emission-free power is another way we are moving clean energy forward.”
All of Reliant Energy’s residential and small business customers can choose a plan with 100 percent Texas wind and all of the company’s term plans include 20 percent Texas wind. Reliant also helped make the 2011 Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo™ the greenest rodeo ever. For the first time in its 79-year-history, the rodeo was powered by 100 percent renewable energy thanks to Reliant Energy.
