We Energies to purchase wind energy from Iberdrola Renewables' Barton Wind Power Project

Iberdrola Renewables has announced a power purchase agreement (PPA) with a new customer, We Energies of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. We Energies will purchase 50 megawatts (MW) of clean, renewable energy from Iberdrola Renewables’ Barton Wind Power Project in operation near Kensett, Iowa.

We Energies will purchase the wind energy from Portland, Oregon-based Iberdrola Renewables to augment the good work it is already doing toward meeting Wisconsin’s increasingly aggressive renewable target. The state requires utilities to get 10 percent of their energy from renewable sources by 2015.

“Iberdrola Renewables is delighted to welcome We Energies to our growing list of customers,” said Barrett Stambler, vice president of origination for Iberdrola Renewables. “We are able to supply energy from an operating wind power plant while We Energies ramps up its own wind farm construction. We look forward to doing more such business with We Energies in the future.”

The 160-MW Barton wind farm in Worth County, Iowa was placed in service in June, 2009. Power deliveries to We Energies began January 1, 2010.

Iberdrola Renewables has become the second-largest wind operator in the US, with operations in 17 states and installed capacity of nearly 3,600 MW – over 30% of the company’s global capacity – spread over 39 wind farms. The company, which already employs over 800 people in the US – nearly half of its total staff – has created more than 14,200 indirect jobs in the US since 2006.

Iberdrola Renovables, with operations in 23 countries, is the world leader in its sector in both installed capacity (with nearly 11,000 MW at the end of 2009) and output (over 21 million MWh).

We Energies serves more than 1.1 million electric customers in Wisconsin and Michigan’s Upper Peninsula and more than 1 million natural gas customers in Wisconsin.
