As a result of high costs, low demand, and recent disasters, global nuclear generation capacity falls
The latest Vital Signs Online (VSO) report from the Worldwatch Institute indicates that due to increasing costs of production, a slowed demand for electricity, and fresh memories of disaster in Japan, production of nuclear power fell in 2011. Despite reaching record levels the previous year, global installed nuclear capacity, the potential power generation from all existing plants, declined to 366.5 gigawatts (GW) in 2011, from 375.5 GW at the end of 2010. Not surprisingly, this drop in installed capacity corresponds with a decline in global consumption of nuclear energy. Nuclear's share... [more]
The new power mix in Germany – what does it mean for the rest of Europe?
In the wake of Fukushima disaster, energy experts now agree that securing Europe’s future electricity supply will require an increasing convergence between existing fossil fuel sources and the fast-growing renewable generation sector. Nowhere is this fusing of interests required more than in Germany, in the light of the government’s decision to phase out all nuclear power by 2022. The case for integration is now compelling and is something that an increasing number of countries are going to have to consider. The current debate among those in the power industry is how Germany will fare with... [more]

The largest wind development in Devon started, assisted by ADAS
ADAS, Environmental & agricultural consultancy, provided environmental co-ordination and assessment services to the developers of Fullabrook Wind Farm in North Devon. ADAS was appointed to ensure that the planning proposal was robust, increasing the probability of approval. Hence, the largest wind farm development in Devon has begun producing and contributing power to the national grid after successfully gaining planning approval and developing the site. It will provide a total installed capacity of 66 megawatts, enough energy to power 5,000 homes. One important element of the success of... [more]
